We have two kinds of memory. Short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory gets stored in the conscious mind or left brain and long-term memory is stored in the right brain or subconscious mind. For a child, they have the capacity to store 5 times more information than Wikipedia in their brain. That’s a lot! And the best way for children to capture information in the subconscious is to bypass the conscious or “thinking” mind by not making them have to think about what they are learning. Of course, most of you reading this are probably thinking what the heck is this woman talking about. How can you learn if you are not thinking about what you are learning? That means you are not paying attention.
In fact, it’s the very opposite when it comes to the right brain. The right brain learns by absorbing information from the environment. It’s almost done on automatic mode. And the more relaxed the mind is, the more information the right brain can absorb and store in the long-term memory. If you are, thinking about what you are learning, then you are learning through more of the left-brain which stores information in the short-term memory and then sometimes leads to forgetfulness because the information is only being stored for the short-term.
This is why babies and small children can learn so much including multiple languages from the time they are born because they are taking information in through their right brain and storing all of in long-term memory for use at a later time.
Nonsense is a wonderful way to help children develop a strong memory. Sequential Memory linking is an incredible method of strengthening memory that was originally developed by the early Greeks. What we have discovered, is that by pairing objects with silly stories, you take the thinking out of learning. You see when a child’s brain is occupied by a silly fun story, their mind is relaxed which means the right brain can take over and absorb the information that is being presented. In this way children can easily remember 40 to 50 even up to 100 images in sequential order without any problem.
So remember if you want to develop a strong memory, relax and learn to take the sense out of what you are learning or teaching and it will last longer in your mind.
