You Become What You Think!

Updated: Feb 6, 2020

So this is a continuation of my last blog where I stated that:

CHILDREN DO NOT INTENTIONALLY CHOOSE TO BE “BAD” KIDS.

And on this one I want to talk about a few simple things about the brain that I will share with you from my hypnotherapy background. Your brain will do whatever is the most recognizable to it. For example, if your brain has a belief that you will not be able to sleep all night if drink coffee in the evening then this is the experience you will have by drinking coffee in the evening and every time you drink coffee in the evening, you will have the same experience until or unless you change what your brain believes about coffee and make it unfamiliar.

We all learn to train our brain from an early age where certain behaviors and ways of thinking become familiar and others not. This happens either consciously or unconsciously, the latter being the more common. What I mean here is many of us do not think about how we are training our brain. It simply happens based on our circumstances, or what we experience, hear and see around us on a daily basis. Conscious brain training means that we choose what thoughts, ideas, sounds, visions that we want our brain to make familiar in order attain a desired outcome.

Athletes for example use conscious brain training to reach peak performance states by telling themselves they are the best, or by visualizing themselves playing to win or hearing people cheer as they score etc.

For most of us however, the things that become familiar to our brains are based on what is happening in our lives and we do not even realize what we are feeding our minds. This is important to consider when we look at our children. I’m sure many of you have heard that it is much easier for us to believe things that are negative about ourselves than those that are positive. This is simply not true. The reason we believe it to be true is because many people have inner negative beliefs about themselves and when they hear more negative, it is seen as familiar to the brain so we accept them more easily than the positive counterparts.

As mentioned earlier, children do not intentionally choose to be “bad” kids. However, when we or others begin to label a child as “bad” or they regularly here words about themselves such as bad, naughty, rude, disrespectful, disruptive, or whatever, these words become familiar to that child’s brain and the matching behaviors gets worse and worse because that is what the brain now believes is the “truth”

This can easily be rectified by making a conscious shift for the child and what they experience regularly. We can help change the child’s mindset by changing what the mind experiences as familiar, meaning speaking to them in a way that says they are good, kind, respectful, helpful, and caring even if they are not there yet. The must hear, feel, see, experience those things that we want their brain to shift to, so much so that their brain begins to forget the old and accept the new.

In the same way, we can do the same for our own negative beliefs and reprogram our own minds with new positive beliefs for a mindset which will also create new outcomes in our lives.
